Thank you to all the parents and teachers in the French committee. Here’s a quick summary of 2009-2010. It was a great year. Looking forward to more fantastic events in September!

Hawthorne community events

Over the past year, the French committee added a je ne sais quoi to the very successful school community events:

  • French knitting (Fall Fair);
  • Fleurs en papier (Multicultural Night); and
  • French karaoke (Greenstock).

The karaoke cds and lyrics are going to be incorporated into Hawthorne’s music curriculum.

French in the school

More French was heard in the school, i.e. morning greetings were in French during announcements and teachers were encouraged to use French in the halls.

We’re hoping one library session every other eight-day cycle will be held in French, starting September 2010.

The teachers have created a new French curriculum for the primary grades.

Administration has promised to support the new curriculum with books and French resources.

On the French committee’s suggestions, enrichment committee invited Chantale Groulx, interactive story teller, and Edith Tankus, French performer, to the school as enrichment events.

The French committee will continue to work with the Enrichment committee to bring great French performances to the school.

French outside the school

The French committee successfully lobbied the Toronto Public Library to start a French story time for 5 to 10 year-olds at the Bloor/Gladstone branch.

More library events in French at other branches across the city are posted on the website.

This summer, look for Tante Caroline at the Bloor/Gladstone branch on July 28, 10:00-11:00 am.

French story time on Saturdays will begin again in the fall.

Check the TPL’s website often to learn about the French component of the public library’s Summer Reading Club. Here’s a link to the book club’s suggested French titles to read this summer. All you need to do is choose.

Hawthorne joined Canadian Parents for French as an associate member for one year, hoping to benefit from the great resources available.
